A Clearing Season

A Lenten Series of Workshops and Worship

 Elk Grove Congregational Church, UCC

A Clearing Season is a Lenten spiritual study that will help us identify the obstacles that keep us from fully experiencing God’s presence in our lives.  We will examine and work through those obstacles.  We will do some exploration and sharing in the group settings then each person will do deeper reading and exercises on their own between the meetings.  Then we will learn new ways of living while clearing a place to meet the divine – just in time to celebrate the Risen Christ at Easter.  Our gatherings will be at 7:00 pm on six Thursday evenings between Ash Wednesday and Easter; February 23, March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29. We will use the book, A Clearing Season by Sarah Parsons.  You may buy this on your own or through Pastor James (for $10).  Please RSVP for this series by calling the church office at 916-685-4825 or e-mailing Pastor James at egcc_pastor@yahoo.com

We do our very best to pay attention to all the aspects of our life In Christ.  One place that is especially important is our spiritual life; our personal connection with God.  There are times when we all ask, “How do I pray?” or “What should I pray for?”  Jesus’ disciples had these very same concerns as we see in the 11th chapter of Luke.  The prayer he gave them has grown over centuries, but the prayer below is often prayed by individuals and in public worship.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

There are many other versions of this prayer which can be found in books and on the Internet.  The important thing to remember during prayer is to think of God as your very best friend; one to whom you can tell and ask anything!
